PRINCE Harry brought the house down while delivering an “off the cuff” speech at his wedding reception.
A guest at the royal couple’s afternoon reception at St George’s Hall revealed how everyone cheered when Harry referred to Meghan Markle as his wife for the first time.
The Prince’s entertaining speech followed an emotional address from his father Prince Charles about Harry’s childhood.
According to the magazine, Prince Charles delivered a “brilliant” speech sharing how proud he was of the man Harry had “grown into”.
“He ended it calling him, ‘My darling old Harry, I’m so happy for you,’ which was very sweet,” the guest said.
“He said he was very pleased to be asked (to walk Meghan down the aisle) and happy to help out.”
In a particularly touching moment, Prince Charles reportedly paid tribute to Meghan and detailed Harry’s childhood, before complimenting the couple on how “beautiful” they looked.
“Some people were even crying. I think it was just a very, really nice atmosphere to be in where everybody felt really loved,” Ms Jalota said.
“Essentially it was just about how Harry was as a child and growing up. And now just about the couple and how beautiful they are together.
“So I think it was just about their personalities and how they gel really well together.”
After speeches, star guest Elton John delighted the crowd with an impromptu performance.
“He was incredible. It became like a mini-concert in the reception area. It was great,” Ms Jalota said.
While both Princes reportedly impressed attendees at the evening function, some guests may have been left disappointed by the omission of the groom’s late mother in speeches.
According to the Daily Mail, a guest at the reception said there was “no mention of Diana in the speeches”.
“Charles spoke about feeding Harry a bottle and changing his nappy, and then said look how well he turned out,” the guest said. “That’s about as embarrassing as it got.”
The lavish reception was of course also lacking a father-of-the-bride speech after Meghan’s father pulled out of proceedings only days before the wedding.
But the bride more than made up for it, reportedly giving a speech at the evening reception at Frogmore House, in a surprising break from tradition.
Best man Prince William was also expected to give a speech in honour of his brother and new sister in law, while also acting as MC for the event.
Guests attending the afternoon reception feasted on a range of canapés which included warm asparagus spears wrapped in Cumbrian Ham and “Scottish Langoustines wrapped in Smoked Salmon with Citrus Crème Fraiche”.
The more intimate gathering was hosted by Prince Charles and attended by 250 guests inside a $538,000 glass marquee.
The newly-married Duke and Duchess of Sussex turned up the Hollywood glam as they switched into evening gown and tuxedo for the intimate reception.
Meghan changed into a bespoke floor-length halter-neck gown by Stella McCartney the evening’s festivities.
In a touching tribute, Meghan wore a stunning emerald-cut aquamarine ring that once belonged to Harry’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales.
Prince Harry drove the couple the 800m from a private apartment in Windsor Castle to greet guests at the evening reception, arriving in a converted electric Jaguar.
The newlyweds’ arrival was only the latest break in royal tradition for the couple, who were praised for a modern ceremony.
Their nuptials at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle featured a showstopping sermon from an American preacher and a moving rendition of Stand By Me by a black gospel choir.
