I recently stumbled upon a website called Ladies of Australia.
The owner of the blog shared an amazing article about sexual empowerment and I wanted to share it with you.
Have a read and let me know what you think.
Sexual Empowerment: You can be sexy AND a feminist
Writing this blog, I can’t help but think back to a conversation I overheard recently. Cast your mind back with me to a tiny toilet cubicle which I skillfully maneuvered my way into last Saturday evening. As two young women entered the washroom, laughter filled the room as one of the girls cheekily admitted to going home the evening before with a Tinder date she had only just met. “Oops, I’m the worst feminist ever!” she laughed. Feeling a little creepy for lurking in a toilet stall eavesdropping on their conversation, I quickly made my way out of the room… but I found my mind wandering back to the young woman’s comment throughout the night. Does sleeping with a Tinder date make you a bad feminist? I certainly didn’t think so. I’m not sure she really believed that either, but it did get me thinking: why do we place such stringent conditions on being an advocate for women? It seems that in 2018, women are increasingly feeling pressured to be the ‘right kind of feminist’ instead of being able to freely express their true thoughts and behaviours.
This blogger for one likes makeup, dresses and many things that are generally associated with femineity; occasionally I enjoy showing off clothes to my partner that I think to make me look sexy, and on top of all of this, I am a proud feminist. Despite the feminist stereotype of an unattractive, single and angry woman continuing to persist in popular culture, let’s make 2018 the year of us.
If you want to embrace your sexy AF body, if you want to wear pink clothes and spend an hour putting on makeup every day, or if you want to have bangin’ consensual sex with your Tinder date, you do you gal! Advocates for women’s rights are diverse, they are powerful and they are inspiring.
Last year, Australia ranked 35th worldwide for gender equality. There’s still a lot of progress to be made, but for now, the Ladies of Australia team have decided to embrace sexual empowerment and are excited to announce the launch of our ‘adult range’ on our website. So get shopping… and enjoy. 😉
